Q: Do I have to use the hose connections?
A: The hose connections are meant to be installed into the hose threads of the tank permanently so that the tank hose threads do not get damaged ( note: the hose will thread directly into the tank if necessary ). Failure to use the connectors over time may result in tank thread damage and would void the lifetime guarantee.
Q: Can the aquarium be operated from a separate pump?
A: Yes. You can operate the aquarium close to the water and use either a submersible or dry pump to circulate the local fresh water. Check out our accessory tab for an ideal safe battery operated pump which is ideal to use our aquarium on your dock or other low lying area close to the water. Using an existing cottage lake water system, which most often is provided through a submersible pump and pressure chamber combination, is more efficient and uses very little power.
Q: Can I secure the lid at night without the tie wraps initially provided with the Cottage Aquarium?
A: Yes, you can use practically anything that will fit through the holes in the lid and tank to secure the lid and keep your critters safe from nocturnal carnivores like raccoons. ( you could use string, wire, or even thin strong sticks as examples ).
Q. How do I keep fish from jumping out?
A. If you are keeping fish that are very energetic and like to try and jump out, you need to lower the water level by using the upper hose connection for inflow and the lower connection for outflow. You may also reduce the flow rate to the tank.
Q: How do I keep the water clean?
A: You can place less mud, sand, and debris in the tank. Most of your critters will still enjoy a murky tank, however, you won’t be able to see them as well. More rocks and clean little logs will keep the water more clear. For animals that live more out of water, try to place moss on the dry areas and keep it in place with rocks on top. You can also scoop out debris with a little net.
Q: What things should I put in the tank with my animals ?
A: Most of your animals will like to hide a little. So creatively placed rocks and small logs will give them hiding places to hang out. Moss is always nice if you keep the water level low enough to have a dry spot.
Q: Can I purchase replacement hose connectors?
A: Many big retailers, like Walmart, Canadian Tire, and Home Depot, carry hose connectors.
Q: Where should I take my critters when it is time to put them back into the wild?
A: Your critters don’t have to go back to exactly where you caught them, but if can do that, it would be great. The surrounding lake water system of most cottages is suitable for all your critters.
Q: How do I properly care for the aquarium over the winter?
A: Leaving your aquarium out in the open over winter would void the lifetime guarantee. You don’t have to store it indoors; however, it needs to be covered from the elements. If water is left to freeze inside the aquarium, it could damage the unit.
Q: How do I change water levels in the aquarium?
A: Using the higher hose connection for the inflow ( attached to your cottage water system ) will lower the water level. Using the lower connection for inflow will raise the level. Changing flow rates will also change water levels.
Q: What is the ideal water level and flow rates to operate the aquarium?
A: Ideally, you want to operate the tank at a lower water level and low flow rates. The tank is most often operated using the higher hose connection for the inflow, and just a “ trickle” flow of water. It is best not to use a long hose for the outflow, to allow the water flow out easily. During the day, when you want to watch your critters for a while, you can have fun experimenting with different flow rates and water levels.
